Dental crowns are meant to cover up and protect all of your remaining  tooth structure. This means that they provide excellent protection against future tooth decay, infection, and other complications.

Natural Look & Feel

Your crown will be custom-crafted out of porcelain ceramic material that will match your existing teeth perfectly. Once it’s in place, it will look just like a real tooth!

No Special Care Required

Brush, floss, and see Dr. Paul Ferraro at Oasis Dental for six-month checkups. That’s all you have to do to keep your crown in great shape!

The Dental Crown Treatment Process

Tooth Prep & Crown Fitting

Beginning your dental crown procedure, our dentist in Mission Viejo will clean and numb the treatment area. Then, he will remove damaged enamel and trim your tooth to prepare for a crown. Next, he will use our digital intraoral scanner to take a 3D image of your mouth. Finally, you’ll be sent home with a temporary crown to protect your tooth.

Building Your Crown

Dr. Ferraro will send the 3D model of your mouth to our partner dental lab, where they will build your permanent crown from ceramic materials. This process takes 2-3 weeks.

Final Crown Placement

Once your permanent crown is done and has been sent to Oasis Dental, you’ll come in for one last appointment. Dr. Ferraro will remove your temporary crown, clean your tooth, then check the fit of your porcelain crown. If everything looks good, he will bond it into place permanently with dental cement, then send you home with a new smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Forever is a very long time! And while no dental treatment lasts forever, dental crowns come pretty close! Similar to a dental bridge, a crown usually last 10-20 years. Some patients are able to keep their crowns for up to 30 years with no problems. And if your crown ever breaks, wears out, or otherwise becomes damaged, Dr. Ferraro can repair or replace it.

It is important to care for your dental dental daily, just like your real teeth. Regular teeth cleaning, dental checkups, and flossing is important for maintaining your new crown and keeping up with your oral health!

If you don't have enough tooth structure to support a dental crown, don't worry, there are still options available to you. In cases where there isn't enough natural tooth structure, your dentist may recommend alternative treatments such as inlays or onlays. These restorative options are similar to dental fillings but provide more extensive coverage for the damaged tooth.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations that are fabricated in a dental laboratory. They are typically made from porcelain, composite resin, or gold, and are designed to fit precisely into the prepared tooth structure. Inlays are used when the damage is confined to the center of the tooth, while onlays are used when the damage extends to the cusps or points of the tooth.

Your dentist will evaluate your specific situation and recommend the most suitable treatment option for you. By choosing the right alternative treatment, you can still restore the functionality and aesthetics of your tooth, even if you don't have enough tooth structure for a traditional crown.

A dental crown is a versatile dental restoration that can serve multiple purposes. It is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its strength, shape, size, and appearance. Here are some of the key benefits of dental crowns:

1. Protection: Dental crowns provide a protective barrier for weak or damaged teeth. They help prevent further decay, fractures, or breakage by covering the entire visible portion of the tooth.

2. Restoration: Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been severely decayed, cracked, or damaged. They provide a durable and long-lasting solution to restore the tooth's functionality and appearance.

3. Aesthetics: Crowns can improve the appearance of misshapen, discolored, or severely stained teeth. They are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, resulting in a seamless and natural-looking smile.

4. Support: Dental crowns are often used to support and protect teeth that have undergone root canal treatment. After the infected pulp is removed, a crown is placed over the treated tooth to provide strength and protection.

5. Dental Implants: Crowns are also used in conjunction with dental implants to replace missing teeth. The implant acts as an artificial tooth root, while the crown is attached on top to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing replacement tooth.

Dental crowns are designed to be long-lasting, but they may not be considered permanent. The lifespan of a dental crown depends on various factors, including the material used, oral hygiene practices, and the forces applied to the crown during normal chewing and biting.

On average, dental crowns can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or even longer with proper care. Porcelain crowns are known for their durability and natural appearance, while gold crowns are highly resistant to wear and corrosion. However, it's important to note that the underlying tooth structure can still be susceptible to decay and gum disease, which can affect the longevity of the crown.

To ensure the longevity of your dental crown, it's crucial to maintain good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Avoid biting or chewing on hard objects, such as ice or pen caps, as this can cause damage to the crown. If you experience any discomfort or notice any changes in your crown, it's important to contact your dentist for an evaluation.

Remember, while dental crowns are a durable and reliable dental restoration, they may require replacement over time due to normal wear and tear or changes in your oral health.

There are several different types of dental crowns available, each with its own unique set of advantages and considerations. The most common types of dental crowns include:

  1. Porcelain Crowns: Porcelain crowns are popular due to their natural appearance and ability to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. They are an excellent choice for front teeth or highly visible areas.
  2. Metal Crowns: Metal crowns, such as gold or silver, are known for their strength and durability. They are less prone to wear and can withstand the forces of chewing and biting. However, their metallic appearance makes them less suitable for visible areas.
  3. Porcelain-fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns: PFM crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain. They have a metal substructure for strength and a porcelain outer layer for a natural appearance. PFM crowns are often used for back teeth where both strength and aesthetics are important.
  4. Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are made from a strong and durable ceramic material. They offer excellent aesthetics and are highly resistant to chipping or cracking. Zirconia crowns are a popular choice for both front and back teeth.

The choice of crown material will depend on various factors, including the location of the tooth, your aesthetic preferences, and your dentist's recommendation. Your dentist will evaluate your specific needs and help you choose the most suitable crown material for your individual case.

In some cases, it is possible to place a dental crown on a decayed tooth, but it depends on the extent of the decay and the overall health of the tooth. If the decay is minimal and hasn't affected the structural integrity of the tooth, a crown may be a suitable treatment option.

Before placing a crown on a decayed tooth, your dentist will first remove the decayed portion of the tooth and ensure that the remaining tooth structure is strong enough to support the crown. If the decay is extensive or has reached the inner layers of the tooth, additional treatments such as a root canal may be necessary before placing the crown.

It's important to address tooth decay as soon as possible to prevent further damage or infection. If you suspect that you have a decayed tooth, it's essential to schedule an appointment with your dentist for a thorough examination and appropriate treatment recommendations.

Remember, early detection and treatment of tooth decay can help preserve the natural tooth structure and prevent the need for more extensive dental procedures in the future.
